Dittrick Medical Museum
Medical history museum featuring a lovely doctor's office from the 1800sHoused at Case Western Reserve University, the Dittrick Medical History Center is dedicated to the study of the medical past through a distinguished collection of rare books, museum artifacts, archives, and images.
It has one of the most comprehensive collections of surgical instruments and medical equipment in all of America and exhibits cover everything from bloodletting to nursing outfits. Perhaps the museum's most notable exhibits are the reproductions of doctors' offices from 1875 and 1930. The 1875 office is particularly magnificent, with its leather chair, fireplace and human skeleton hanging in the corner.
Be sure to ask to see the gorgeous microscope collection on the second floor.
The Museum expanded exhibit space in 2009 and now includes a Gallery dedicated to the History of Contraception. The name of the exhibit is "Virtue, Vice, and Contraband: A History of Contraception in America"
Obscura Day location: April 9, 2011.
