Spanish for "the water boils", Hierve al Aqua is comprised of two cliff sites with white formations cascading down the cliff face like waterfalls transformed into stone. There are two man made swimming pools at the tops of the falls

In a process similar to cave stalagtites, the waterfalls were formed by small amounts of water interacting with calcium carbonate in the cliff, slowly running down the side over thorusands of years. The area was unsurprisingly also a sacred place to the Zapotecs of the Oaxaha valley, who left behind tearraces and canals being explored by researchers today.
