Monjuich Cemetery

Over 152,000 people are buried at the Monjuich Cemetery.

Opened in March of 1883, Manjuich is the biggest cemetery in Barcelona. In the 19th century when Barcelona began to rapidly outgrow its accommodations for the dead, the rocky slopes of Montjuich, a scenic little mountain beneath the Mediterranean, seemed like a beautiful spot for the deceased to reside.

In Monjuich, you can find famous residents such as Lluis Companys (1882-1940), Buenaventura Durruti (1896-1936), Joan Miró (1893-1983), and many others.

Walking through beautiful modernist graves, sorrounded by pines and watching the sea--experiencing this cemetery is widely considered to be one of the most enjoyable experiences in Barcelona.

If you walk to the top you can see a crematorium, and enjoy 150 years worth of art history. The journey to the crematorium is a very long walk and it takes more than 3 hours to tour the entire cemetery, so make sure to arrive prepared for a bit of a hike.
