Created in 1997 by Kansas artist Stan Herd, the portrait of aviator Amelia Earhart covers 42,000 square feet of hillside in her home town of Atchison, Kansas.

The earthworks were constructed on a hillside overlooking Warnick Lake, with a viewing deck on a nearby hilltop. The artist has also created several other earthworks around the United States and around the world.

Amelia Earhart famously set off in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, and disappeared somewhere over the South Pacific. It is thought that she crash landed into the waters off the remote Nikumaroro Island. Nearby on Howlard Island, a lighthouse tower named after her stands in perpetual wait for her re-fueling stopover.

The Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum is also located in Atchison.
