The product of a 1905 financial gift to the city of Chicago, The Fountain of Time, or as it is actually named, "Time" has been reminding people that their time on this Earth is limited for over a century.
The Washington Park installation depicts 100 human figures from across the spectrum of age from infants to crones, seeming to rush across an arch towards some uncertain future. Separate from this piece of the sculpture is the imposing figure of Father Time watching the human's scramble to their doom. The figures are mainly intentionally generic although the artist did include himself and one of his assistants on the West side of the piece.
It is constructed from hollow concrete reinforced with steel which has held up pretty well although the statue eventually needed restoration which took place over the last 30 years. Given the amount of time the statue has lasted, its message of time's effects will continue to be spread to its visitors.
